HIGH FIVE AMERICA MIDNIGHT BASKETBALL LEAGUE Expanding to Mira Mesa and Highway 78 Corridor The purpose of Midnight Basketball is to offer hope where there is little; to enrich misplaced lives; and to re-direct young men away from an environment of guns, drugs, and the criminal justice system. It is the signature community service program of High Five America and is aimed at the 18-25 demographic. The program, which consists of workshops for life skills from 9:00 to 10:00 PM, with the games played from 10:00 PM to 2:00 AM, is conducted at the Mid-City Gym, located at 4203 Landis Avenue. MIDNIGHTBASKETBALL HAS FOUR SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES 1. To reduce recidivism among known juvenile offenders 2. To improve employment opportunities 3. To increase educational attainment 4. To provide positive role modeling for 'high-risk' San Diego youth
High Five America has compiled statistics on the 450 participants in High Five America's Midnight Basketball Program, covering the five years of the program's history.
Communities impacted - Mid-City, Logan Heights and Southeast. Ethnic and Racial Makeup of Participants - 83% African American, 8% Mexican American, 6% Caucasian, 3% Other. Education - 15% (68 of 450) of the participants dropped out of high school before entering Midnight Basketball. Gang Affiliation - A total of 18% (81 of 450) of the Midnight participants acknowledged gang affiliation. Drug Use - A total of 30% of the program enrollees admitted drug use. Legal Problems - We discovered that 23% of the people in the program have been incarcerated at some time. Children - Roughly 21 % of the participants are unmarried with children. Unemployment - Fully half of the participants (229 of 450) came into the league unemployed.
These facts, discouraging as some of them are, are counter-balanced by the following items:
Educational Placement - Fully 14% of our participants have attended a trade school, community college or a four-year college. Job Placement - High Five has assisted 106 participants (46%) in interviewing for and being placed in a job. Recidivism - Of the 107 participants who were incarcerated at one time, only 10% (11 program members) returned to jail. High Five Participation - 10% of the program members have been involved with High Five America in other HFA programs.
Midnight Basketball's approach with these young men can best be explained by the acronym REECH, which stands for Recreation, Education, Employment Case Management and Health. League participants are required to attend mandatory seminars, covering a variety of topics and issues. Some of those topics and speakers have included:
Sexually Transmitted Diseases: Tony Marshall Hand Gun Violence: Susan Pollock Resume and Job Preparation: Robert Floyd Children Having Children: Mshinda Nyofue Employment Market Place: Julie Gelfet
